Lewis Edwards

ledwards@williamsburgvolleyball.com

Recreation Department Liaison to WVC Board , Facility Coordinator

A 1975 graduate from NCSU with a B.S. in Recreation and Parks Administration, a B.A. in Sociology, and a BSer in all disciplines, Lewis has been Athletics Director/Recreation Supervisor with the Williamsburg Recreation Department for 32 years. He has been coordinating the city’s volleyball programs, including youth leagues and camps, for over 30 years. He also runs the city’s tennis and adult basketball programs and is the city Liaison to the Historic Triangle Senior Center. Lewis initiated the area’s first Co-Ed Adult Volleyball Leagues in 1978. Over the years, that program expanded from 8 teams the first season to as many as 90 teams per season in Co-Ed, Men’s and Women’s Leagues. Interest stoked by the Rec Leagues sparked the formation of the Williamsburg Volleyball Club, which was initially an adult organization with men’s and women’s teams that played in USAV tournaments.

Lewis was instrumental in the formation of the Club and its partnership with Williamsburg Recreation. The WVC eventually added Junior teams in the late ‘80s. Lewis became the first WVC Juniors Director when it morphed into a Juniors only club after many of the adults, including Lewis, became too old and decrepit to play competitively without constant laughter and derision from opponents, referees, spectators, and worst of all, teammates.

Along with other WVC founders and then Williamsburg Recreation Director Paul Hudson, Lewis was a member of the “Let’s Build a Gym” Committee in the late ’80 which spearheaded City’s effort to build Quarterpath Gym. He is also helped initiate the Revolutionary Rumble and has been the tournament director since it’s inception in 2003. Lewis has played volleyball, the world’s greatest sport, for 45 years and officiated it for 40 years, including over 30 years as a USAV and VHSL referee. He was a founder and the first Commissioner of the Bay Rivers Volleyball Officials Association.

Lewis’ better half, Joan (a U Md. Terp), has endured 31 years as a volleyball widow. In spite of that they proudly boast two lovely daughters: Kimberly, a JMU grad and paralegal in DC; and Jessica, a Longwood grad employed by CW. Both are planning to head to graduate school in the fall with unlimited moral support from mom and dad.
